Facing the Challenge: Onyx Walls

The challenge:

To exceed the expectations of a long-term client by producing a design with a complexity and level of details unforeseen.

The answer:

There is nothing the team at Patrick Knowles Designs loves more than a good challenge, and in working with this client previously on several projects, we knew the only limit was our imagination.

There is nothing the team at Patrick Knowles Designs loves more than a good challenge, and in working with this client previously on several projects, we knew the only limit was our imagination.

In this particular project the design has an overriding classic American art deco theme which stood out on its own, but there was a need for statement pieces, and what a statement we made!

Hand carved cappuccino onyx stone walls were created to serve as natural pieces of art in two strategic locations in the residence – the main entry reception and the private foyer for the master suite.

In keeping with the language of the art deco era, each onyx panel is carved with exceptional detailing to showcase two scenes of distinct subject matters. In the main entry, an ethereal scene of a family of antelopes on a hillside at sunrise, and at the entry to the master suite, a timely inspired design of deco roses, lotus flowers, art deco inspired arches with linear and angular details

Bronze sculptures strategically placed in front of the carved onyx walls helps introduce a sense of movement and life into the pieces.

Though these pieces are the epitome of monolithic stature the diaphanous waves of the semi-precious stone and the backlight illumination of the design gives it all a delicate and fragile persona.
